Acivir is suggested for the treatment of herpes virus infections of skin and mucous membrane, including:
- After bone marrow transplantation;
- Herpes zoster (shingles) infections;
- First and recurrent genital herpes suppression of recurrent Herpes simplex infections in immuno-qualified patients;
- Management of severely immunocompromised;
- Particularly those with HIV disease;
- Prophylaxis of Herpes simplex infection in immunocompromised patients;
- Varicella infections (chickenpox).
Use Acivir as directed by your doctor.
Don't take the medicine in larger amounts, or longer than advised by your physician.

Take each dose with a full glass of water. Drink plenty of water while you're taking Acivir to keep your kidneys working correctly.
Acivir can be used with or without any food. Taking Acivir with foods may decrease stomach upset.
Take this medicine for the whole duration of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may improve before the illness is completely treated. Acivir will not treat a viral illness including the typical cold or influenza.
Lesions due to herpes viruses should be held as clear and dry as possible. Wearing loose clothing might help avoid aggravation of the lesions.
