Carafate is indicated in:
Short term treatment (up to 2 months) of active duodenal ulcer. Remedy needs to be continued for 4 to 8 weeks unless healing has been shown by x - ray or endoscopic examination, while healing with sucralfate may occur during the first week or two.
Maintenance therapy for duodenal ulcer patients at reduced dosage after healing of acute ulcers.
Carafate is a gastric protective. It works by building a protecting coating on the ulcer to serve as a buffer against acid, bile salts, and enzymes in the stomach.
Use Carafate as directed by your doctor.
Just take Carafate by mouth on an empty belly at least 1-hour before or 2 hours after eating.
Do not take an antacid for a minimum of 30 minutes before or after using Carafate.
It may take 4 to 8 days for complete recovery of your ulcer. Carry on taking Carafate for the full span of therapy even though you feel better.
Don't take Carafate at once as other medicines. Take Carafate at least two hrs after other medicines. In case you are not convinced about the best time to take Carafate, ask your physician or pharmacist.
In case you miss a dose of Carafate, go as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dosage, return to your usual dosing schedule. Do not take more than one dose at the same time.

Don't use Carafate if:
You're allergic to any component in Carafate.
Contact your physician or physician right away if one of these apply to you.
Some health conditions may interact with Carafate. If you hold any medical conditions, particularly if any of the following apply to you tell your doctor or pharmacist:
if you are pregnant, intending to become pregnant, or are breast feeding
If you're using any prescription or non-prescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
When you are allergic to medicines, foods, or other materials
if you have kidney problems or are on dialysis, or have congestion of the intestines or difficulty taking.
Some medicines might interact with Carafate. Communicate to your health care provider if you are using any other medications, particularly any of the following:
Citrate salts or medications that contain aluminum, particularly in individuals with kidney infection, because negative effects from aluminum build-up may happen.
This might not be a whole list of all relationships that might happen. Ask your health care provider if Carafate may interact with other medications which you take. Check with your doctor before you begin, stop, or adjust the dose of any medicine.
Important security advice:
Carafate may cause dizziness. These effects might be worse if you take it together with alcohol or certain medications. Simply take Carafate with caution. Don't drive or perform other possible unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
Carafate has aluminum within it. Check the tag to see whether it has aluminum in it too, before you start any new medicine. Should it or in case you are not certain, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
Carafate must be combined with extreme care in children; safety and usefulness in children have not been validated.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Should you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You'll need to talk about the benefits and risks of using Carafate while you're pregnant. It isn't identified if Carafate can be found in mother's milk. If you are or will be breastfeeding as you take Carafate, check with your own physician. Discuss any possible risks to your own infant.
